I thought I should share my recent experience of changing the jets in my carbs trying to fix a severe stalling problem. After reading the forum and determining I needed to check the carbs and jets in particular I bought 4 kits online from the UK and set about pulling the bike apart. The problem I wanted to fix was a case of the bike stalling a lot. It would stall when put in gear, it would stall when you came to a stop, it would stall when you tried to accelerate slowly away. When riding at low revs it would do a kerchug kerchug kerchug kind of thing.
Once the carbs were out I removed the float bowls and changed the jets with a quick clean out. Putting it all back together wasn't too bad either. I stopped myself from seperating the four carbs and left them in line. That next step looked like trouble. Without too much effort to put back into place I simply reconnected the cables I tried to restart the bike. Much to my surprise it started up and the problem has been completely solved. I was hoping not to make it any worse if nothing else, instead I nail it in one go.
Question is I can't put my finger on what fixed it. The bits I replaced looked ok and I didn't see any obvious blockages. I only wiped things down and blew them out myself. One spark plug came lose during the removal and I thought he may have been misifiring but it was easy to reconnect, including a small snip to try for a better connectivity. Other than that the breather tube between the crank and the air filter had this yucky stuff that may have restricted flow but I can't see that having such an impact.
Anyway I am a very happy biker as it is running great. This is after it being in the shop for $590 fo a service which I felt was way overpriced and didn't fix the stalling or advise on it, poor service. I am now wondering if I am up for tuning the carbs as my next project? Lurv my R1.
