R1 Boiling Over

$

Hello all. Hopefully someone can help me out. I just rebuilt an 07 R1 engine. It had a spun bearing. The bike runs fine but I am having an issue with the coolant boiling over the overflow reservoir. The bike doesn't over heat but when it hits about 190 degrees it will boil over badly. I know that the likely causes could be bad radiator cap...bad thermostat...bad head gasket....cracked head....water pump. I am trying to theoretically rule out some of these to narrow my problem. I replaced the radiator cap and still the same problem. I pulled the thermostat and tested it per specs and it checks good. Just for grins...I ran it without it and still same. I inspected the water pump and it seems fine. I would imagine that if the pump was bad my temp would rise rather quickly. Also...when I rev the engine with the cap off...it is circulating. Oh..I have also burped the system...ran it with the cap off while running so I don't think I have an air pocket. The cyl head was checked for warp and it was good. I had the head resurfaced. New head gasket. I rented a block tester kit to check for exhaust gas in the coolant and nothing. Pressure tested the radiator and good. Pressure tested the cap and good. I am narrowing it down to something wrong with the head? No coolant in the oil. No oil in the coolant. Did and leak down on all cylinders and no leaks. Lastly I did this. I ran the bike with a high powered fan in front of it. Temp stays down and it doesn't boil over. Turn the fan off and let it hit about 190 degrees till I see bubbles in the reservoir. Turn the fan back on and the temp goes down and does not overflow. I would imagine that if there was a bad head gasket (which is new) or a cracked or warped head....bringing the temp down with the fan would not prevent it from boiling over. I mean if it is in fact getting pressurized with combustion gas (which the block test showed negative)...isn't a crack or warp or bad gasket (which is new) would show a boiling problem regardless of temp? I mean my temp doesn't rise quickly...and it only happens at around 190 degrees...it never overheats. I am seriously lost. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Okay, so I'm looking at my stator cover, tightening it up because it's leaking a small bit of oil and as I glance up I see these switches. Photos attached. They are located right next to the key release to the rear seat storage.

I've scoured the owners manual and can't find anything that these switches are related too. Anyone? Btw they are set to on. I turned them to off and nothing blew up so....

2015 R1 Spotted!!!!

FS: 09-14 R1 Yoshimura R77 Titanium Slipons & Two Brothers SS Y-Pipe - $600 Shipped

What's up guys, here is a set of titanium Yoshimura R77 slip-ons that I shortened myself. They aren't perfect and they are used. I had them on the bike for less than 500 miles. The reason that I am selling is because I've decided to go BACK to a low-mount setup. This is my 3rd exhaust setup so far and people seem to like the look of the under tail exhaust on these bikes. Nevertheless, I am asking $475 shipped for the slip-ons and $150 shipped on the y-pipe (cat-eliminator). If you decide that you want both (basically a full 3/4 exhaust) I'll knock $25 off the system which puts us at $600 shipped for a FULL 3/4 exhaust. The inlet pipes for the slip-ons and the y-pipe are stainless steel.

As many others have stated, my 07 sputtered and struggled to stay running when at a stop, rough idle... A few weeks ago that all seemed to have stopped and I was not sure why - then I destroyed my wiring to the exup servo motor, I fixed the wiring but the servo motor still would not work - then I remembered that I had not heard the exup servo check, 2-3-2 etc, for a while. Now I'm wondering of the servo motor failed a few weeks back even tho I did not get error 17/18 until the wiring was chewed up - now I just have error 18 (which I can not get rid of) my check engine light came on a few weeks ago too...

Has anyone noticed that once the exup was removed the idle smoothed out?

Looking back now, what tips or suggestions do you wish you had known before owning your first motorcycle and/or R1?

For me, I wish someone had told me the importance of tuning my suspension, which makes a huge difference in the bike's handling. It is a fantastic mod that is also cheap!

Buying used brake calipers

So my 99 calipers are worn and I was going to rebuild them but after speaking with a local bike mechanic he said it is a bad idea to rebuild them when they are that old because it will not work as good anyways so he suggested I should look for a pair of lightly used ones. I need front & rear. But when I look for used ones on Ebay they look like they are in TERRIBLE condition much worse then mine, can someone please describe what I should be looking for to know if the used calipers are still in good condition. What is my least inexpensive option but still get good brakes on my bike because OEM calipers are 800 bucks just for front ones...

will slight wear on the back of clutch hub hurt?

im replacing my inner clutch boss assembly. the part with the bolt holes for the springs, the one i got has some minor grooves where the thrust washer goes behind it, im not sure what caused it but it looked like lack of lubrication or something. i smoothed it out with sandpaper best i could but theres still a few minor indented scratches in it where it contacts the thrust washer. will it hurt anything to run it like this? right now its ok but i dunno what caused the issue in the 1st place, and im not 100% sure how that thrust washer works or which surface it spins on.

Hi guys some help please? I have Watsen indicators/signal lights front and rear. just recently they have stopped working, Next ride out they came on and stopped half way through the ride, next day worked again and went off etc. Am I looking at the Yamaha indicator/signal relay not coping with 4 led's or a problem with the switch?

Cheers

PS yes I know they blink on and off so I am not stood behind the bike going "its working, its off its working its off".....lol

04 r1 power commander memory

I recently purchased a 2004 r1 with full m4 exhaust and power commander installed. The battery took a puke a few weeks ago and I just got around to installing a new one. I have never felt with a power commander before, so my question is will it retain the program installed in it by previous owner after having been disconnected for a while or do I need to install one again? Thanks.

Hello R1 forum. I am in the market for a replacement bike and liking the sound of the 2015 R1 that is supposed to be coming next year.

I am hoping it will be all that has been said so far. It will be my first ever Yamaha. I had 3 previous CBR liter bikes and recently a BMW HP4.

Just wanted to get familiar with the Yamaha brand and this community.
